(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Promontory Financial Group, the premier consulting firm for financial services companies worldwide, announced that Toshinori Kurihara has been named a Managing Director in its Japanese affiliate, Promontory Financial Group Global Services-Japan LLC.

Mr. Kurihara, who joined Promontory today, brings more than 25 years of financial services expertise in both government and the private sector. While at FSA, he also served on the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision’s Standards Implementation related groups. He entered government service in 2002 after two decades in commercial and investment banking with major Japanese banks.

At Promontory, Mr. Kurihara is part of a unique team of professionals that includes former senior financial services regulators and executives. Promontory provides strategic advice and assistance to many of the world’s largest financial companies, with a particular focus on developing practical solutions to address regulatory, risk, compliance, governance, capital and liquidity issues.

“Mr. Kurihara is a perfect fit for Promontory—possessing both a banker’s practical experience and a regulator’s sensitivities,” said Eugene A. Ludwig, Chairman and CEO of Promontory Financial Group. “He is joining us at a time when Promontory is enjoying tremendous business and reputational growth in Japan,” Mr. Ludwig said.

“Our clients will benefit greatly from his deep insights in areas such as economic capital, risk management, and stress testing,” said Takuya Fujii, President and CEO of Promontory Financial Group Global Services.

Before entering government service, Mr. Kurihara worked in commercial and investment banking in New York and Tokyo. He began his career at Yasuda Trust and Banking Co. in Tokyo as a derivatives trader, and later moved to New York to take up a position at Nomura Securities International, where he was a managing director in structured finance. He went on to become president of Nomura-IBJ Global Investment Advisors Inc. in New York, a joint venture between two of the world’s leading financial services companies.

Mr. Kurihara also serves as a visiting professor at Hiroshima University, where has taught courses on risk management and the FSA’s supervisory framework and inspection process. He is a graduate of Keio University.
