25 Traffic Awareness Venues in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during Ramadan

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, July 4th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, in coordination with Saeed Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents, recently organized intensive programs involving all society segments during the Holy month of Ramadan. These programs focus on raising awareness about traffic safety and reducing traffic accidents that result in fatalities and severe injuries.

According to Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, the Executive Director of the Saaed Society, “The program includes awareness through 25 traffic awareness venues at shopping malls, gas stations, and mosques in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region. Through these venues, the awareness teams will be able to communicate directly with the public after the evening prayer, distribute awareness publications, and answer their queries.

The awareness venues in Abu Dhabi include the following centers: Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Center, the Khalidiyah Mall Center, the Mushrif Mall, Marina Mall, the Carrefour, the Bawabat Al Sharq Center, and Sheikh Zayed mosque; on highways: Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre, Al Mirfa Shopping Center, and the bus station; in Al Ain:  the Bawadi Mall, Al Mabraza, Al Ain Mall, Al Foah Mall, and the Duty Free in Al Ain.

Lt. Colonel Al Ameri also said that the program, which started with the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan, aims at delivering traffic awareness messages to community members about the need to comply with traffic laws, reduce speeds, the risks of running red lights, and the need to fasten seat belts. The awareness messages also include advice to motorists about pedestrian zones, and the need to avoid using mobile phones while driving.

Moreover, Lt. Colonel Al Ameri reiterated the attention dedicated by the directorate to providing traffic safety during the Holy month of Ramadan. “This initiative comes as a result of an analytical study of road accidents and traffic safety levels of Abu Dhabi during Ramadan from (2009-2012). The study has shown that most major accidents in Ramadan take place during the periods between 12:00 to 1:00 pm and from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, and the rate of accidents increases between 11:00 pm and 12:00 am,” he said.

The study also showed that traffic accidents on external roads amounted to about 68%, while internal roads witnessed 32% of accidents during that same period.

Most traffic accidents during Ramadan were collisions, followed by running over or swerving accidents. Traffic incidents during Ramadan are mainly caused by neglect, not paying attention, sudden lane change, speeding, running red traffic lights, not leaving enough space, entering a main road without checking if it is clear, or tire bursts.
