MoI Discusses Enhancing Efforts to Spread the Culture of Human Rights

The Ministry of Interior’s Human Rights Committee held its fifth meeting at the Ajman Police General Headquarters. During the meeting, which took place in the presence of Brigadier Ali
Abdullah Alwan, Commander in Chief of Ajman Police, the committee discussed ways to enhance efforts exerted by the Police General Headquarters and the Punitive and Correctional Establishments in the UAE in spreading the culture of human rights through purposeful strategic initiatives, increasing awareness, and protecting the various society segments.

The meeting was chaired by Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nehkairah Al Mahrami, Head of the Human Rights Department and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Interior. Brigadier Al Mahrami stressed the need to intensify efforts exerted by the different police entities to achieve the highest levels of security and safety for all. He also highlighted the importance of instilling the concepts of human rights, justice and social responsibility in community members and striving diligently to make the UAE a haven of security and safety, in line with the Ministry of Interior’s vision outlined in the 2014-2016 strategic plan.

 Brigadier Al Mahrami also shed the light on the valuable role of the ministry in providing legal options for the various social segments, especially the special needs categories, such as crime victims, women and children, the elderly and people with special needs, and the different types of workers so that everyone living in the UAE can enjoy security and safety.

The attendees also discussed the Ministry of Interior’s preparations that are underway to mark the Human Rights Day observed by the international community every year on December 10. They also reviewed the Ministry of Interior’s recommendations regarding the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism related to human rights to be included in the UAE’s third national UPR report, which will be presented to the United Nation’s Human Rights Council by the end of 2016.
The meeting was attended by Brigadier Mohammed Khalifa Al Marar, Director General of the Undersecretary Diwan at the Ministry of Interior, and Brigadier Dr. Mohamed Abdullah Al Murr, Director of the Dubai Police Human Rights Department; in addition to members of the Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Interior.
