ADP Traffic and Patrols Concludes the First Round of the World Cup for Road Safety



The first initiative of its kind in the region

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police recently concluded the first round of the World Cup for Road safety, the first initiative of its kind in the region, which was launched through the Road Safety World Cup Application dedicated to the ‘Together’ campaign to reduce traffic accidents on several social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, noted that the first matches of the group stage of the tournament have concluded, and announced the winning teams that qualified for the sixteenth round of the competition organized by the directorate.

He added: “The group stage of the tournament witnessed strong competition, and yielded an affluence of tweets and posts via social media platforms from the more than one million participants. The various interactions were instrumental in determining the results of the matches between the teams that were striving to achieve excellent results in order to avoid elimination; guarantee victory; and finish on top of the group table.

Brigadier Al Harithi also noted that “organizing this competition is intended mainly to highlight the directorate’s keenness and interest in activating the community’s role regarding traffic issues, due to their significant role in supporting our strategy and our efforts to increase traffic safety levels, which s is an integral part of our ambitious vision to reach a safe traffic environment.

The results of the leading teams in the group stage of the tournament came as follows:

1st Group: Licenses and illegal additions teams

2nd Group: Tires and Child Car Seats teams

3rd Group:  Pedestrians and Road Billboards teams

4th Group: Driving while engaged in other activities and Trucks teams

5th Group: Speed and Brakes teams

6th Group: School transport and Curbing Reckless driving teams

7th Group: Sufficient safe distance and driving on rough roads teams

8th Group: Red lights and Driving while feeling tired teams

It is worth mentioning that a total of 32 teams are participating in the competition. Names of the teams were inspired from traffic safety topics, and they  will face off against each other during a 90-minute match, the team that manages to send out the most tweets and awareness messages on their road safety topic according to the relevant hashtag designated for each team wins the match.  The team that wins the competition will be crowned World Cup for Road Safety Champion and will be awarded AED 45,000 prize money.
