International Confederation of Music Publishers Hosts Music Rights Workshop on Key Industry Challenges in Dubai

Event Held in Conjunction with Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City and Fairwood Music (Arabia)

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Wednesday, November 10th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:

Dubai Media City and Dubai Studio City, members of TECOM Investments Media Cluster, today announced that key UAE government decision-makers and global leaders in the music publishing industry attended a one-day industry workshop in Dubai.

Organized by International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP), Fairwood Music (Arabia), as well as Dubai Media City and Dubai Studio City, the workshop titled ‘ICMP Music Industry Growth and Development Workshop’ addressed the key local and international challenges faced by the music industry. The event also aimed to identify a system that will benefit and nurture young songwriters and artists, in addition to offering copyright protection for local music.

Participants at the workshop included representatives from Universal Music Publishing Group, EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Peermusic and Warner/ Chappell.

ICMP is the umbrella trade organisation that represents the interests of the music publishing community worldwide. It is represented in the Middle East through its music publisher and associate-member in the UAE - Fairwood Music (Arabia).

Stephen Navin, Chief Executive of the UK Music Publishing Association and member of the ICMP Board, said: “As music publishers, our role and privilege is to seek out great music and songwriters in every corner of the world, and promote them across the global marketplace. The power of music is enormous – educationally, socially, culturally and economically. Music is the drumbeat for each of our lives. But however strong its influence, it too needs protection and that is why a robust copyright framework is necessary to safeguard its value so composers can earn their living and publishers can invest in developing new and exciting talent."

Jamal Al Sharif, Managing Director, Dubai Studio City and Dubai Media City, said: “It is truly a privilege for Dubai Media City and Dubai Studio City to host the International Confederation of Music Publishers’ music rights workshop to address the local and international challenges faced by the industry.

“We have established a vibrant media community in Dubai and the UAE. Our support to industry development initiatives such as this is aimed at promoting a world-class regulatory infrastructure for the music/entertainment and creative industries to protect intellectual property and ensure compliance with the UAE copyright laws.”

Hussain Spek Yoosuf, Managing Director, Fairwood Music (Arabia), said: “Music publishing is a multi-billion dollar worldwide industry that historically has remained largely absent in this region. There is no doubt that a robust copyright infrastructure helps to kick-start that growth, helping to develop the industry and support artists to take their music around the globe. I believe the UAE is poised to lead regionally in this respect, and this workshop initiates steps in that direction.”

TECOM Investments’ media entities – Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City and International Media Production Zone – provide a complete value chain of specialised offerings including music publishing that have created an established community hub for the media and content creation industries in the region.
