Central Maine Power Proceeds With Trilliant for Smart Grid Communications Network

Maine Utility Leverages $96M DOE Stimulus Grant and Trilliant's Multi-Tier Architecture to Deploy 620,000 Smart Meters to All Residential and Business Customers

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Thursday, July 15th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Trilliant Incorporated, a leader in delivering Smart Grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency, utility operations and renewable resource integration, today announced that it has completed agreements with Central Maine Power (CMP) to provide a complete Smart Grid communications network and advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) solution.

CMP is part of the Spain-based Iberdrola Group, the world's fifth-largest utility with over 30 million customers in 40 countries. Iberdrola services nearly 3 million customers in New York and New England through its U.S. affiliate, Iberdrola U.S.A.

CMP was recently awarded $96M under the Smart Grid Investment Grant program of the U.S. Department of Energy authorized under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. The company will install smart meters for all of its 610,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customer accounts beginning later this summer. CMP's service area encompasses roughly the southern third of the state, but accounts for nearly 80% of consumer sales of electricity in Maine. Matching funding from the corporation will bring the total investment to nearly $200M.

The Smart Grid deployment will use Trilliant’s SecureMesh™ communications network to provide a comprehensive high-bandwidth private Wide Area Network (WAN) and Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) that interconnects meters and other Smart Grid-enabled devices to enable consumer energy management. Trilliant's UnitySuite™ head-end software will be used to manage the Smart Grid network. Other services include prime supply of electric meters, network design and installation services, software integration, and project management.

Trilliant partnered with leading companies to bring a best-in-class solution to CMP. General Electric (GE) and Landys+Gyr are providing electric meters and IBM is providing Tivoli/Netcool software to integrate with UnitySuite applications for robust and scalable management of CMP's Smart Grid communications infrastructure.

"We have ambitious goals for our Smart Grid network and we needed a partner with a proven track-record of successful large-scale deployments," said Elizabeth Nowack Cowan, Vice President of Customer Service at Central Maine Power. "Our selection process has been exhaustive, and we're confident that Trilliant's multi-tier expertise sets their solution apart. The flexibility and security of the multi-tier architecture, combined with Trilliant's successful, large-scale deployment at Hydro One in Canada gives us confidence we made the right choice."

"We are thrilled to be working with a company that is part of one of the world's largest global utilities on this leading project," said Andy White, President and CEO of Trilliant. "Central Maine Power has an aggressive schedule, challenging terrain, and strong value commitments to their customers and shareholders. Trilliant was uniquely capable of providing not only a proven and cost-effective solution, but a future-proof Smart Grid communications network with the bandwidth and speed to improve customer service, distribution automation, and consumer energy efficiency over the long term."

The Maine project is Iberdrola's first advanced metering infrastructure project in the U.S. CMP expects to complete the installations by early 2012. The AMI system will improve the company's operations and customer service. It will also enable electricity supply companies and Maine regulators to work toward creating new benefits for consumers such as flexible rate schedules, lower energy costs, and peak demand load-shifting and load-shedding programs.
