Only System that Generates Native Iris, Finger and Face Templates Onboard, Reducing Bandwidth Requirements and Speeding Transmission Times
STAMFORD, Conn., Thursday, July 15th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- L-1 Identity Solutions (NYSE:ID), a leading provider of identity solutions and services, today introduced the HIIDE system that meets a wide range of U.S. and non U.S. customer needs for identification, verification and enrollment. It includes HIIDE 5, a small, lightweight, user-friendly unit with optimized functionality ideal for high-volume remote enrollments and a new middleware application that enables the HIIDE to generate onboard templates for iris, fingerprint and facial images that are identical to those used in various authoritative databases, the only device of its kind with this capability. The system is customizable to fit a wide range of military missions, homeland security applications, law enforcement and transportation security programs. It complements HIIDE 4, a device that continues to serve as an important tool in the theater of operation and remains in high demand among customers.
“Building off of our unparalleled HIIDE success with more than 12,000 units in the field, we developed the HIIDE 5 system in conjunction with a customer to introduce a device that marries a small form factor with enhanced capabilities for quickly identifying and enrolling large numbers of people in the field,” said Robert V. LaPenta, Chairman, President and CEO of L-1 Identity Solutions. “Remote operating environments pose many challenges, not the least of which is often low bandwidth communications and immature networks. This makes it a must to have a system that is easy to use, has maximum functionality and that can deliver exceptionally fast transmissions to and from the central database. With it, troops can quickly ascertain if a subject is a match to an identity already in the system and proceed accordingly, significantly reducing the critical time when the war fighter is on point and most vulnerable.”
Removing the greatest obstacle to speed and efficiency in these systems, HIIDE 5 generates onboard templates for iris, fingerprint and facial images that are identical to those used in various authoritative databases, including the Department of Defense (DoD) Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). The templates are approximately one-tenth the size of standard image file formats used by other systems, reducing bandwidth requirements and speeding transmission times.
HIIDE 5 is a self-contained and man-portable “hasty enrollment” device that offers a smaller and lighter alternative to protective Pelican cases that include a stand-alone camera, mobile iris unit, live scan capture device, laptop and battery supply. At the same time, the HIIDE unit is compact, weighing only 3.1 pounds and easily fitting into a cargo pocket for optimal portability. HIIDE 5 has a full-quality optical sensor for single or two finger flat and roll fingerprint capture, the only optical sensor FBI-approved for enrollments. Simultaneous dual iris capture, a full-function camera for face capture, and built-in image quality checks come standard. A Global Position System (GPS) and wireless transmission capabilities supporting 802.11, Bluetooth, 3G/4G cellular, WiFi, Tactical Radio and WiMax are also included. Additional functionality in HIIDE 5 includes:
* Highest onboard storage capacity in the industry, ensuring significantly higher search and hit rates in remote locations. The device accommodates storage for up to 500,000 biometric portfolios, or over one million identities, making the device ideal for high volume remote applications.
* Smallest form factor device, coupled with significant usability enhancements, simplifies and speeds the mission. The 8”x3”x5” unit represents the smallest form factor available and includes auto-focus to eliminate the need for physical contact with the subject to achieve optimal focal distance. Constant screen visibility for the operator minimizes retakes and speeds time for capture. Point-and-click capabilities simplify the entire process with fewer and more intuitive steps.
* Top-rated iris and face algorithms ensure fast and accurate matching. According to a recent independent IREX NIST test, the L-1 algorithm received top ratings when combining accuracy, speed and template size. The L-1 algorithm had the lowest false rejection rates from the most demanding tests and the fastest matching and best accuracy with an extremely small template size. L-1 algorithms are used in both HIIDE 4 and 5. In the most recent NIST testing results for face, L-1 ranked highest in the combination of scalability and accuracy, making it ideally suited for large database applications.
* Added levels of encryption and tamper protection enhance security. The unit encrypts code, data and transport to ensure complete protection and security over the device and the data stored on and transmitted from it. Tamper protection on the physical unit eliminates the ability to corrupt or disable the unit.
New Middleware Application Enables HIIDE to Communicate with U.S. and Non-U.S. Systems and Authoritative Databases
A new middleware application released in conjunction with HIIDE 5 runs on a laptop in the field and enables the device to communicate seamlessly with U.S. and non-U.S. database systems.
It is the only system of its kind with this capability and represents a substantial expansion for the HIIDE beyond current support for the Department of Defense BAT (Biometrics Automated Toolset).
The L-1 middleware reduces the complexity of managing multiple devices and allows for mission based data management across many devices. It supports watchlist development, the ability to push data wirelessly out to devices, and easy data sharing between devices and databases. It also offers onboard subject record management encompassing de-duplication, synchronization between devices and the field laptop, and wireless import/export of subject records.
LaPenta concluded, “These technological advances are the result of our commitment to continuously innovate. It is this focus that enables us to set new standards of performance for the industry and boost our solution light years ahead of the competition. This innovation also translates into greater flexibility for customers, giving them the ability to choose the tool that best fits the mission, be it HIIDE 4s, 5s or a combination of both. Each unit is unique in its ability to solve specific challenges encountered in areas of conflict and our customers are responding favorably to the choice by continuing to order and receive both types of units.”
